Airport plans for increase in passengers

23 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
QUEENSLAND Airports Limited is forecasting further growth at Mount Isa Airport following the release of its 2009/10 passenger movements report.

Mount Isa had an intake of 184,860 passengers from the period of July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, which was a growth of 1.2 per cent compared to the figures from the 2008/09 period.

The June 2010 figures also showed a 22.5 per cent growth from June 2009, with 17,691 passengers arriving in Mount Isa.

QAL Mount Isa chief operating officer Kevin Gill said the figures suggested the improving state of the mining industry.

"Mount Isa Airport's intake is very much dependent on the growth of the local mining industry. It's pleasing that after a short, sharp downturn that the airport has recovered quickly," he said.

"It would be fair to say the downturn from last year would have been partially due to the uncertainty caused by the old mining tax, but now that uncertainty has been removed, and we're seeing the results of that."

Mr Gill said the increase in passenger numbers came at a good time as Mount Isa Airport prepares for the final stage of its terminal and runway upgrade.

"Both the terminal upgrades and the works on the runway are due for completion by end of August," he said.

"The new terminal will double the size of the existing area available, including the lounge area, and the construction of the new indoor baggage carousel."

Mr Gill also praised the support of the various commercial airlines that have flown into Mount Isa for their role in the success.

"There have been multiple services from the likes of Skytrans, with their route to Cairns, and REX's services to Townsville that have been well received," he said.

"In addition, Air North has been able to string Mount Isa together with routes to both Darwin and the Gold Coast. But Qantas has played a large role in supplying its largest Boeing 737-800 planes, which has meant they can allow extra passengers on their daily services."

If Qantas lowered their ridiculous price of flying to Mt Isa, the airport would receive even more visitors. Mt Isa is a great place to visit, but most are put off by the massive fare.

And to add enough room so that Virign can build a terminal for their Embraur services.

Good that Rex is now flying between Townsville and Mount Isa, especially the new flights on Friday and Sunday. At least you now you can get a cheaper priced ticket and the differnt times are good.

It would be nice if they could do something about the freight side of things. Dropping off and picking up big items is a pain . You can`t park here and you can`t park there . Try carrying a 40kg part from the end of the carpark to the terminal.
