INDIGENOUS artists in the city have the chance to showcase their artwork to the nation by entering the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, which opened nationally yesterday.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists can be in the chance to win $40,000 cash by simply submitting their artwork.
Telstra Far North Queensland general manager Amanda Albon said this was a fantastic opportunity for local artists to put their best work forward.
"Each year we see such a remarkable display of artworks entered into the Award, from detailed barks to intricate canvases," she said.
"The permanent inclusion of the Telstra New Media Award has brought a new dimension to the Award, creating an avenue for artists using innovative technology to share their work with the nation."
The Telstra Art Award is Australia's longest running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
The prize pool for the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award comprises the major $40,000 Telstra Award and the following five categories:
n $4000 Telstra General Painting Award
n $4000 Telstra Bark Painting Award
n $4000 Telstra Work on Paper Award
n $4000 Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award (also sponsored by Telstra)
n $4000 Telstra New Media Award
