Council kills pet

16 Feb, 2010 08:45 AM
MOUNT Isa City Council pound has killed a dog who escaped from its owners yard during last Wednesday's thunderstorm, after taking money from its owner for its release.

The Jack Russell-cross named Biscuit was destroyed despite its owner, Georgie Martin, identifying the dog as hers.

The council has a policy of putting dogs down if they remain unidentified after three days, but Biscuit was not even given that long.

Ms Martin found Biscuit in the pound the day after she went missing.

"She was so happy to see us, but there was nobody there," she said.

After calling the pound's phone number, she was told to go to the council office to pay for Biscuit's release.

Ms Martin had not registered Biscuit with the council, and so she first had to pay $180 to register the dog, and then another $200 to have her released from the pound. On Thursday afternoon Ms Martin could only afford to pay the registration fee, and told the council she would be back in the morning to pay the release fee.

"I didn't have that sort of cash, so I had to borrow some money. I was even counting out my gold coins," she said.

On Friday morning Ms Martin paid the $200 fee at the council offices, and then went to the pound to pick up Biscuit at 9am.

"The woman at the pound looked stunned when she looked at my receipts."

Not knowing where Biscuit was, or if she was okay, Ms Martin went home and called the council.

But it wasn't until 4.55pm Ms Martin's call was returned.

"They said 'I hate to inform you but there's been a terrible mistake.'"

Biscuit was dead.

I think the pound opening hours to pick up pets needs to be longer, between the hours they are open people are at work and not all of us can get off work to go in!! Some people work at the mines 4 days on 4 days off and will not be able to make the deadline of the 3 days before there pet is put down!! and im guessing this wouldnt be the first time this would have happened but people just havnt found out that the at the pound has put their pets down!! they need to be open not only during work hours but after work so people can pick up there pets or have a longer period before pets are put down!

Get Real, Be a responsible pet owner. The question should be raised as to why the dog ended up in the pound at first place, Don't blame others take responsibility and look after your pet!!!. if not than don't have one, we have dogs and children running a muck every where, and we blame the council and state government, Dog owners and parents have responsibility as well. And why the dog was unregistered, Simply beacuse the pet owner is irresponsible. She should be charged for having a unregistered dog.

If the plight of little Biscuit saves another puppy then at least some good will come from this. My prayers are with you Biscuit.
