Council searching for sporty recruit

07 Feb, 2012 06:58 AM
MOUNT Isa City Council is keen to employ a Local Sport and Recreation Coordinator to enhance the city's activities.

The council had successfully applied for funding for the position under the Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan, securing a funding of $52,000 per annum over three years.

Mayor John Molony said the creation of the Sport and Recreation Coordinator position was a milestone for the council.

"This Sports and Recreation Coordinator will integrate the different clubs and groups, and source more opportunities for Mount Isa to be involved in sport and recreational activities," Cr Molony said.

"Australians love their sport and Mount Isa is no different; you'd find the community engaging in sports, especially on a weekend.

"It's part of creating a lively Mount Isa where people live, work, love and play."

The notice of motion to apply for the funding grant through the Queensland Government Department of Communities was put forward by Cr Robbie Katter in March last year.

"Sports in Mount Isa have suffered since the introduction of 12-hour shifts at the mines, and sporting organisations have since worked hard to maintain numbers," Cr Katter said.

"Having a number of strong sporting organisations in town is a critical part of the social fabric and helps keep current residents here while attracting new ones.

"The creation of this Sport and Recreation Coordinator acknowledges this and will hopefully provide that support to our local sporting organisations.

"Many of the hard working club officials are overly committed - acting as match officials or manning canteens on game day - and have limited spare time for many of the governance issues including grant applications for expansion.

"This council position will fill this task and not only maintain existing sports in Mount Isa but grow and support future events like the Western Games."

The council has estimated that apart from recruitment costs, Council would also have to make an annual average contribution of $59,021 per annum over the three-year period.
