Eye on illegal prostitution

09 Mar, 2010 07:41 AM
ILLEGAL prostitution in Mount Isa is an ongoing problem, according to Mount Isa Police.

A 30-year-old woman appeared in court yesterday on charges relating to prostitution and tainted money.

She received bail and will next appear on April 19.

The woman was arrested and charged after police raided a licensed venue in Mount Isa in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It follows ongoing investigations by Mount Isa Police into illegal prostitution in the city.

Further undercover investigations of addresses in Mount Isa last Friday night gave police the evidence they needed to charge a 50-year-old woman with knowingly participating in the provision of prostitution and tainted money.

She will appear in court on April 15.

Mount Isa Inspector Paul Biggin said illegal prostitution was an ongoing problem in the city.

"While there is a legal licensed brothel in Mount Isa, there is ongoing illegal prostitution happening here," he said.

"Police are closely monitoring the issue and are performing ongoing undercover investigations to stamp out the problem."

Insp Biggin said while police knew about some illegal prostitution, they relied heavily on information from the public to investigate further.

"Complaints alerted us to illegal acts in this case and any information in the future may help to charge people engaging in prostitution," he said.

Anyone with information should contact Mount Isa Police on 4744 1111, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The wording of this article makes it sound like that all sex workers are illegal workers and criminals. So for the uneducated public it would sound like it you see a hooker you should call the police. More information about the laws should of been added to this article: that private workers working alone, who are only offering protected services and not working from a licensed premise such as a pub- it's totally legal. Not to mention the total waste of tax payers money policing pleasure- in a state that entrapment by the police is legal.
