Fake profile links mayor to Facebook taunt

09 Feb, 2010 09:09 AM
POLICE are investigating offensive comments made from a fake profile on social-networking website Facebook, which pretended to be from Cloncurry Shire Council mayor Andrew Daniels.

Cloncurry man Ace Remfrey said he checked his Facebook account yesterday morning and found homophobic comments from an account in the name of the local mayor.

Cr Daniels said he had never had a Facebook account, and had referred the matter to the police.

"Hopefully the police will get to the bottom of whoever it is and there will be action taken once we find out who it is," he said.

Mr Remfrey said he was offended when he first saw the comments, but believed that Cr Daniels was not to blame.

"At first I thought the worst, but after I thought about it for a while I thought surely he's not that stupid to say something like that publicly. I was shocked that someone would say something like that," he said.

Cloncurry detective senior constable Dave Milburn confirmed the matter was under investigation by police, but said he had no further comment.

Mr Remfrey said he was concerned that someone had created a fake Facebook profile in Mr Daniels's name, but at first he did not suspect the account was fake.

"I have no idea at all who it would be. The profile itself looks like an official profile. It's got a photo of him in protective clothing on a job site. He's got a hard hat on and a reflective vest," Mr Remfrey said.

"Security wise, it's a concern that someone can create someone else's identity."

Cr Daniels said he hoped the person who created the fake profile will own up.

"I'm open to talking to anyone who is involved to clear up the incident. It's basically very disrespectful and I'm hoping to get it cleared up as soon as possible."
