MOUNT Isa's multicultural festival has received a boost with an award and funding for the event.
A highly commended community organisation Queensland multicultural award was presented to organisers of the event by Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan.
"Each year the team of organisers led by Father Mick (Lowcock) puts together a magnificent celebration of the vibrant and diversity of cultures present in Mount Isa," Mrs Kiernan said.
"The annual Mount Isa multicultural festival has been getting bigger every year and it is now acknowledged as a most important part of Mount Isa's social and cultural calendar," she said.
Event organiser Father Mick Lowcock said last year's festival, featuring Melanesian Islanders, particularly Torres Strait Islanders and Papua New Guinean people, saw close to 4,000 people attend.
Mrs Kiernan announced $15,000 in State Government funding for the festival, on par with last year's contribution.
Fr Lowcock said this year's event would feature the Filipino community and will be held on the first Friday in September.
"We've got a good dozen people on the committee but a hundred or so who volunteer every year.
"The funding makes it possible for us to get acts in from out of town and things like that," he said.
Members of Mount Isa's Filipino community will be responsible for entertainment as the featured culture of the year.
Funding was provided under the Queensland Government's $1 million Multicultural Queensland Partnerships Program for 2011-12.
