Indigenous students mixing with All Stars

03 Feb, 2012 07:06 AM
TWELVE Indigenous students from Mount Isa were flown to the Gold Coast on Wednesday to coincide with the launch of a new eye health program.

OneVision, a division of OneSight and Luxottica eyewear, is to be officially launched tomorrow by Minister for Indigenous, Rural and Regional Health Warren Snowdon.

The students were chosen by faculty from their respective schools to represent the region at the five day program.

Frank De Bush, Mary Mabb, Darren Toby, Kiara Seabourne-Radecker, Jimmy Kum-Sing, Kelly-Ann Dempsey-Richards, Jaydon Hill, Wayne Jackson, Dean Bruce, Tokoda Clark, Esmond George, and Zachary Price were the students chosen.

The group will return this weekend but have spent the past few days visiting Dreamworld, Indigenous All Stars training sessions and games, and at a surfing competition at Stradbroke Island.

Each student visited a state of the art OPSM optometry centre and had an eye test as part of the program funded by Luxottica.

The Mount Isa clinic will be held in conjunction with the NRL's One Community Grass to Class Clinics run by One Community Indigenous ambassadors.

Now why wouldn't they have chosen 12 full blooded aboriginal kids who dont live healthy lives and may well have eyesight problems that could of been picked up by these tests. Its a race based junket ,spending money that could of well been used on real indiginous health issues. Once again the real needy miss out but it keeps the pollies happy thinking they are doing something.

"posted by Jessie" What a great comment, I agree whole heartedly. Unfortunately there is political mileage and money to be made from these Indigenous programs.

All the best to these young aboriginals who get to attend the footy match. Nice to see there is money being put aside for the odd niceties in life.

No non-Aborignal children wanted to go on a free trip to the Gold Coast to visit Dreamworld and other attractions?

This really is unfair to these kids . The past 4 generations of blacks are welfare and grant addicts everything including Billions of dollars have been given to them on a plate . Now we got another generation getting treated like royalty just because they are black..

They should be taught to earn their keep like the rest of the kids..

I can't believe the negative comments on a positive story. Feel better now, Rednecks?
