 Is flood funding enough?

Is flood funding enough?

07 Feb, 2012 06:51 AM
BURKE Shire Council's chief executive officer has said it would be hard to tell if the government's disaster relief funding would be sufficient until floodwaters cleared the Gulf.

The state Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, provided by the Federal and State Governments, was announced last week with 11 shires able to receive funding to help in recovery efforts.

Burke Shire Council acting chief executive officer John Page said the several million dollars allocated to the Burke Shire would be used to repair and reseal washed out roads but it was tough to put a cost on damage mid-wet season.

"The roads are impaired at the moment so we can't get out to see what damage has been done," he said.

"When we did the application we were going on past history."

Mr Page said there was a guideline that if roads in an area were damaged the council had the responsibility to repair the infrastructure to at least the same quality it was before.

"In this area damage occurs on an annual basis and roads are repaired then the next year are damaged again," he said.

"The council is considering having an allocation of our own funding (for disaster relief) and hopefully we can get a seal on some places."

The council will assess any problems with roads when all the tracks are clear of water.

"We have a committee emerging to do some works to get the roads opened but some areas might be a while, there are water over some roads which will prevent it starting," Mr Page said.

"It all depends on the length of the wet season, we had good rain in the last week or so and there's no storms around but we can't get out there so we're relying on property owners to tell us what it's like out there."

Premier Anna Bligh announced on Thursday that the Burke, Central Highlands, Cloncurry, Doomadgee, Flinders, Murweh, Richmond, Carpentaria, Quilpie, McKinlay and Mount Isa councils could access funds for counter disaster operations and to restore damages public assets.
