THE MOUNT Isa Rugby Union (MIRU) is facing a substantial bill after being forced to do repairs on the Rugby Park light poles.
An $82,000 upgrade to the lights was completed in 2011 thanks to funding from the State Government.
However, the existing light poles that were used have succumbed to the elements.
MIRU president Daniel Fualalo said after recent storms the light poles on the eastern side of the ground had tilted and the safety of the public and players was of immediate concern to the MIRU.
"It was noticeable that the light poles began to lean over after some of the storms we had at the end of last year so we began to look at the situation," Fualalo said.
Fualalo said Xstrata provided an initial assessment and recommended the MIRU contact EPOCA Constructions.
"Xstrata came and had a look, but due to the scale and nature of the job put us onto EPOCA."
Further investigations by EPOCA Constructions revealed the bolts securing the light poles to the base had been worn down due to rust.
EPOCA construction supervisor Jim Pennie said the corroded bolts could no longer support the full weight of the poles and there was a real danger of the lights eventually toppling over.
"We have had to lift the lights off with a crane and repair the base so the lights are secure again," he said.
"The bolts had not been grouted when they were first put in so they rusted through due to being exposed to the elements.
"We've replaced the corroded bolts and they should be playing rugby under lights on the weekend," Pennie said.
Fualalo admitted the bill would most likely have to be footed by the MIRU although there was a possibility of insurance covering the work.
"We will have to look at our options but in the end, it comes down to safety and not the cost," he said.
