MOUNT Isa Mayor John Molony said the women protesting against his comments are blaming him because they are “beauty disadvantaged.”
Mr Molony made the comments after more than 200 women and men gathered at the Mount Isa Civic Centre last night to call for his resignation.
But Mr Molony, who did not attend the rally, rejected the protesters’ demands.
“I did not go to the rally because no one would listen to me,” he said.
“I think the women who turned up at that protest rally are beauty disadvantaged themselves and they can’t get over it so they attack me,” he said.
Mr Molony said the protestors weren’t the only people upset by his remarks.
He said some men were angry Mount Isa would settle for “beauty disadvantaged” women.
“I’ve got emails from people all over the world telling me that they like someone who talks straight,” Mr Molony said.
“But now I’ve got men telling me they’ve got a right to be selective and they don’t want me pushing beauty disadvantaged women on them.”
He said Mount Isa provided an opportunity for women to transform themselves.
“It’s a compliment,” he said.
“A woman can come here and transform themselves with love and devotion in marriage from an ugly ducking to a beautiful swan. It can have a complete transformation for a woman.”
