Mums, kids laud library opening

08 Feb, 2012 06:45 AM
MOTHERS at yesterday's Playgroup in the Park were rejoicing at the announcement of a temporary library for the city opening today.

The Mount Isa City Library had been closed due to water damage for almost four months before the temporary location of Buchanan Park's corporate box was announced on Monday.

Mayor John Molony said the opening of the abridged library had followed a lengthy search for a suitable long-term location.

Playgroup in the Park coordinator Daleen Nolle said many of the mothers in the group had complained about the closure of the library and its effect on the community.

"Most mums missed the library and things like craft mornings, I used to go there myself for books for my little one," she said.

"I think transport will be an issue for a lot of mums (at Buchanan Park) but anything's better than nothing."

Mother Bronwyn McNamara moved to the city several months ago so has never experienced the city's official library facility.

"It's been closed since I got here and the new place seems a bit out of the way so hopefully we'll be able to make it," she said.

"I think I'll stick with Playgroup for now though."

For mother Genevieve Vernon the library was more than a place to hire out books.

"One of the reasons we moved to Mount Isa was because it had a library," she said.

"I had post-natal depression when we first got here and the library really helped with that.

"I met most of the friends that I still have now through the library and the different activities they held there."

Ms Vernon said reading was important in a child's development and she had gone to some drastic measures to keep up reading levels.

"I think a community needs access to books.

"I was getting my mother to post books from the Brisbane library up to me which cost us a fair bit," she said.

"My daughter's just started reading chapter books now and that's $15 a book you need to buy so anything's great for now as long as we can get to books."

Cr Molony said the council was in negotiation with three prospective buildings to achieve a long-term temporary library solution but in the meantime only basic library services would be available.

The library can be accessed via the Sutton Street entrances from today between 10am and 4pm.
