MOUNT Isa's State Emergency Service has a? new boat to call upon in times of need.
A Stacer 489 Barra Pro, valued at more than $45,000, was commissioned and presented by parliamentary secretary for emergency services and Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan at Mount Isa's SES office on Tuesday afternoon.
The boat is fitted with a 60HP Yamaha outboard motor, trailer and safety equipment.
The boat is part of the Queensland Government's ongoing fleet replacement process that was promised during the election campaign in 2006.
SES Mount Isa area director Elliott Dunn said the new boat would be a useful addition for its 24 active members.
"We're grateful to receive this regular support from the State Government in replacing our current ageing fleet," he said.
"We try to keep boats for no longer than 10 years. It ensures we can continue to use good facilities when we are called."
Mrs Kiernan said the new boat was part of the Government's "Safeguarding Cyclone Communities" funding.
"This new boat will assist the Mount Isa State Emergency Service unit in storm and flood operations and general operations," she said.
"We as a community single out the SES as the benchmark for volunteering organisations. I don't think we recognise enough that Mount Isa is a very giving community, and the SES exemplify this."
