Police busy as 11 detained

03 Nov, 2009 08:59 AM
MOUNT Isa Watch House was a bit crowded yesterday with eleven people detained by police during the weekend, several for alcohol fuelled public nuisance and assaults.

A steady stream of people entered the docks from the watch house as incidents including several in Burketown and Normanton during the weekend kept police busy and required multiple people to be transported to Mount Isa to face the Magistrate’s Court.

Three people were transported from Normanton at the weekend after an assault on Friday left a man with severe head injuries.

Linton Leon George, 19, was among those who faced Mount Isa Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Mr George faces a charge of grievous bodily harm after he was allegedly involved in assaulting another man while armed with a metal bar.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.

Mr George was released on bail on the condition he did not return to Normanton – he has found temporary accommodation at the Topsy Harry Centre – and did not associate with the other accused and the alleged victim of the assault.

He will next face court at a committal mention in December.

Also among the group at the watch house was Burketown resident Natasha Rose Butcher, 28, who had been charged after she allegedly assaulted two people, including her next door neighbour, while armed with an offensive weapon at the weekend.

The mother of four had sought accommodation with her de-facto partner in Mount Isa and was released on bail on the condition she did not associate with the people she is alleged to have had the altercation with and did not return to Burketown unless first given written permission from the local police station officer-in-charge.

Mount Isa Police Inspector Paul Biggin said police were preparing for an increase in alcohol fuelled offences as the hot summer months descend on the region.

“Police are certainly prepared for an increase in people drinking and we will take a zero tolerance approach towards residents misbehaving.”
