POLICE have uncovered a cache of weapons in the hunt for the killer of Mount Isa father Aaron Dale Macfarlane murdered last month.
The guns were found in a Mount Isa home at the weekend and have been sent to Brisbane for forensic examination to see if there is a match for the murder weapon, or indeed if it is linked to the murder.
A police spokesman yesterday praised the public's willingness to come forward with new information after a public appeal by police in last Friday's edition of The North West Star.
Mr Macfarlane, 30, was shot on the night of January 3, 2012, in what police are treating as "a suspected murder".
The badly wounded Mr Macfarlane was taken to the Mount Isa Hospital's emergency department late that night and died of injuries early January 4.
Local police, with help from Brisbane Homicide Squad officers, located the vehicle which delivered Mr Macfarlane to the hospital, and later found two murder scenes in bushland about 20 kilometres out of Mount Isa.
A police spokesman said new information from the public on Friday and Saturday directed them to search, with the help of State Emergency Services personnel, bushland in and on the outskirts of the city.
They also conducted another series of door knocking of Mount Isa homes on Saturday which has generated further lines of inquiry, the spokesman said.
"As a result of information received police seized a number of guns from a residence in Mount Isa and the weapons will be subjected to forensic examination.
The spokesman would not say whether the guns were hand guns or rifles, or in which suburb they were found.
He said police felt they were close to major breakthrough in the case, and were keen to hear more public information in relation to the murder of Mr Macfarlane.
Anyone with further information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, with anonymity.
