IT’S that time again – National Youth Week 2009 kicks off tomorrow night.
The annual event which runs from March 28 to April 5, has a variety of events planned for Mount Isa.
Flexi School youth worker Alvin Hava said the event was a great chance for adults to see youth in a positive way.
“Youth week recognises the value of our youth in the community,” Mr Hava said.
“It showcases what they do provide in terms of talent and it’s just a chance to collaborate with them as youth.
“It shows the positives of kids and not always the negatives.”
Mount Isa Youth Week activities have been organised by 10 dedicated local organisations including the Department of Communities, Isa Skills - Job Futures Youth Services, Centrecare Family Services, Youth With A Mission, Mount Isa PCYC, Reconnect Services, Young People Ahead, the Mount Isa Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services and Catholic Flexi School.
Yesterday was the last collaboration meeting to finalise events for next week.
National Youth Week in Mount Isa will be launched at Saturday Night Live, while on Tuesday the PCYC will hold a movie night.
Wednesday is Youth Homelessness Awareness Matters Day on the lawns of the Civic Centre.
And Saturday is the free finale party at the skate park featuring a skate and bike competition and a variety of art, music, skate and bike workshops.
Other events in schools and thoughout the community are also happening.
Mr Hava expects around 2000 young people to get involved in the week of activities.
“It’s not only adults that do positive things for the community but the young people to.”
