INSPIRED by an exhibition of 650 red and white quilts in New York, Mount Isa quilters are keen to have their own travelling exhibition of quilts depicting the 'red centre' of Australia.
Co-ordinator Debbie Alford said anyone could contribute to the exhibition, Infinite Horizons, which will travel around North West Queensland in 2012 and 2013.
"We've already got some red and white quilts finished and there may be some antique red and white quilts out there that people would like to display," Mrs Alford said.
"This will be a community project.
"It will be a chance to showcase local talent and something small towns can be involved in."
Centres which have expressed interest in hosting the exhibition are: Winton, Boulia, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, Burketown, Camooweal and Normanton.
"We will be asking local councils to be the custodians while the exhibition is in their area and we're also keen to hear from other centres as well," Mrs Alford said.
The Mount Isa Quilters group is aiming at showcasing the exhibition first at the Cloncurry Show in mid June 2012.
"Quilts will have to be finished and submitted by the end of April and we want to make it clear that we're not looking for professional quality to the quilts, just quilts that are home-made, prized, loved, maybe family treasures," Mrs Alford said.
"But they must be in shades of red and white."
The quilts must be within certain measurements, in order to fit display racks: No shorter than one metre and no longer than 2.5 metres on any side.
The quilts will be returned to their owners after the travelling exhibition.
The exhibition can be co-ordinated with any significant event in a town.
It is an opportunity for local craft or quilters' groups to raise money in their area, with the request that funds raised go to the elderly of that region.
