TRANSFORMING scrap metal into sculpture is the concept behind Christopher Trotter's intriguing work displayed in Animated Steel, an exhibition opening in Cloncurry tomorrow.
Animated Steel has been developed by Queensland Arts Council as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, and features sculptures, intricate working drawings and photographs of works by acclaimed Boonah artist Christopher Trotter.
Creating iconic public artworks across Queensland since 1994, Trotter's sculptures feature in public and private collections around the world.
Queensland Arts Council Exhibitions director Lisa Beilby said the exhibition promises to inspire, intrigue and delight audiences of all ages and interests.
"Animated Steel is full of quirky artworks that give viewers insight into the scope of Mr Trotter's artistic practice, and promotes creative recycling solutions for future generations." said Ms Beilby.
"Christopher Trotter is a sculptor able to handle with delicacy exquisite details and fine drawings; however he is skilled also on a monumental scale, as some of his works also are? I love the Boab tree with tractor-seat flowers - so inventive."
Mr Trotter said he likes to think he breathes new life and personality into the material. His creations are welded combinations of scrap metal parts from marine, aviation, automotive, printing and farming industries.
"Every object I choose to use takes on a new role - one that helps create a work with new life, movement, integrity and balance," said Mr Trotter.
Visitors to Brisbane will remember the lounging kangaroos on the footpath on George Street in the central CBD with humour and love. City Roos sat outside the Australian Pavilion during Shanghai's 2010 World Expo and his public sculptures can be seen in Townsville, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Winton, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Stanthorpe, Tannum Sands, Bundaberg and Mackay.
