 Stepping up animal patrols

Stepping up animal patrols

02 Feb, 2012 06:53 AM
MOUNT Isa City Council is boosting its animal management efforts with a newly fitted fibreglass canopy on its patrol vehicle and increasing its patrol hours.

With three cages and a hydraulic lift to lever dogs and cats from ground level into the vehicle, Mayor John Molony said the fibreglass canopy would make it safer for local laws officers when handling animals.

"The hydraulic lift improves work health and safety for local laws officers who sometimes had to carry dogs and cats into the vehicle, and with such close contact, officers ran the risk of being bitten or infected by a sick animal," Councillor Molony said.

"The fixed cages also allow more than one animal to be transported in the vehicle without them coming into contact with one another," he said.

The canopy was a prototype created for council by Australian Work and Leisure Vehicle Innovations, and the council would be contributing to a risk and benefit assessment on the canopy.

"Council's local laws officers will be providing important practical feedback to the company on how the canopy could be improved," Cr Molony said.

Cr Molony also said the council had increased its animal patrol hours since the beginning of the year, with patrol hours now starting at 6am instead of 8am.

"In response to community reports of roaming dogs in the morning, Council's extended animal patrol hours have been very successful in picking up wandering animals and bringing them to the pound safely," Councillor Molony said.

"The earlier start also coincides well with the school timings, making it safer for students who are walking to school," he said.

The council will soon be featuring animals brought to the Mount Isa City Council Pound on its Facebook page.

Monstrous cats we here in the Isa if we need a hydraulic lift to get them in the ute. Maybe John and the local laws people need to join the Irish club gym to build up their muscles to be able to lift a cat .

Who cares about the new car and the increased working hours. what the council have just done is nothing compared to what needs to be done in this town.

There needs to be an animal shelter so the animals can have more of a chance to find a new home.

Fines need to be given to the people that are breeding their dogs without permits.

Discounts need to be given to those who want to desex their animals that can't afford it.

Aggressive animal owners need to do the right thing.

the list goes on and one.

Molony just wasted a whole heap of money on a lifting device instead of a shelter.

I find it highly disgraceful that His Grace Monsignor Maloony is hogging the limelight in the North Western Star this week. He is not even in the running for the robes next election. Surely he could hand the presentations over to messrs Borewick, SlyPork and MacRuddy and share it round a bit. The readers of this paper are highly influenced you know.

@Nay87, your complaints, sorry, suggestions, don't make much sense. I would think the discount on desexing would be something a VET would offer, not council; animal shelters are usually run by independent parties, not councils; fines ARE handed to those breeding without permits (if they are caught) and aggressive animal OWNERS need to take full responsibility for their animals. It's not council's place to make sure these OWNERS do the right thing. How about you think before sounding off? Just a suggestion...

What an absolute waste of money. The animal control issues in this town are appalling. The 4km drive from my house to the CBD on any occasion would have me pass at least 10 wondering dogs, no collars, not fed in disgusting condition. This town isn't that big and yet I have to assume that animals services had never been on my side. The sad truth is, there's no point fining people who aren't going to pay fines so these dogs just need to be taken and put down because the breeding rate is ridiculous and someone needs to do something to try and get on top of the problem.

I actually drive to a different suburb to walk because of all the big angry dogs around my place new Food For Less. The number of puppies at the moment is shocking in that area!

Council should be :

1. Providing financial assistance to vets to carry out cheap desexing- or better still employ their own vet who will AUTOMATICALLY desex your animal if it is picked up wandering- no permission needed.

2. Build animal shelters to help with rehoming.

3. Random patrols and fines for not having your animal registered

4. MANDATORY animal care/husbandry/welfare classes in schools

5. Fines for people who breed and advertise animals if they are not registered breeders

6. Free dog /puppy education classes mandatory for all pet owners.

Hydraulic platforms-JOKE!!!!! HAHAHA
