Students get taste of Shakespeare

08 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
STUDENTS in Julia Creek and Cloncurry will get a taste of Shakespeare today.

Bell Shakespeare's Actors at Work program will visit the isolated schools to give them access to the work of the British playwright.

Actor Brendan Barnett, who tours with the group, said for some students it would be their first introduction to the famous plays.

"The whole idea of what we do is to bring Shakespeare to as many kids and adults in Australia regardless of where they live," he said.

"We try to adapt it to make it as easy to understand and relate it to their lives and their own experiences."

He said he was passionate about bringing Shakespeare to life for the younger generation, who may not place as much importance on his revolutionary writing.

The group of four actors will perform a combination of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer's Night Dream at Julia Creek Primary School and St Joseph's Primary School Cloncurry today. They will perform for Cloncurry State School students tomorrow.
