A small group, believed to have been comprised of both Doomadgee Dragons players and spectators, is alleged to have threatened the referee and match officials after some of the referee's decisions during the match went against the home side.

The penalty count during the game was one-sided in favour of the visiting Normanton Stingers and the Dragons had four tries disallowed during the physical match.

As the game approached full-time it is alleged that several threats were made against the referee and match officials made the decision to ask local police to intervene and escort them from the ground.

Normanton Stingers president Mark Hogno said it was a case of "a minority ruining it for everyone" and that it was a disappointing end to the on-field action.

"You don't threaten referees and match officials," he said from Normanton yesterday.

"The passion became a bit of an issue; it was a minority involved but people should never have to get a police escort from the field."

The incident has been referred to Queensland Rugby League and QRL Northern Division manager Scott Nosworthy confirmed yesterday that investigations had commenced.

"We are looking into it and chasing up reports from the referee and match officials," he said.

"Once we have all the information we [QRL] will make a judgement as to what the next step is."

Every individual involved with the game - from players and coaching staff to match officials and spectators - was bound to abide by the Australian Rugby League's National Code of Conduct, which outlines standards of behaviour expected and penalties for instances where the standards are breached.

Mr Nosworthy said the investigation needed to determine if any breaches had taken place.

"We need to look at what's happened," he said.

"If there has been a breach [of the National Code of Conduct] those involved will be dealt with under those rules."

One of the key principles of the National Code of Conduct states that every person involved with rugby league should "discourage all instances of unsportsmanlike behaviour, foul or illegal play, or acts of violence, both on and off the field".

Players are required to adhere to similar codes of conduct and on page six it adds that referees and officials should be treated with "the utmost respect".

The National Code of Conduct outlines penalties involved with breaches that include suspensions and fines but Mr Nosworthy would not be drawn into speculation about possible outcomes for those involved in the incident.

"We'll make a judgement call when we reach a decision," he stated.

Representatives of the Doomadgee Dragons would not comment on the incident when contacted by The North West Star yesterday.
