THE Mount Isa community is in shock after the sudden and tragic death of a 20-year-old man at the weekend.
The man died when his motorcycle collided with a parked car in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It is believed he was travelling along Fisher Drive when for unknown reasons the accident occurred.
Police and Emergency Services were on the scene immediately and attempted to revive the rider.
He was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later.
Mount Isa Police Inspector Paul Biggin said the trail bike had somehow veered onto the pathway.
"The motorcycle seems to have made its way off the road, around a wheelie bin and impacted the rear passenger door of an unoccupied car," he said.
"As result the rider was ejected over the vehicle that the motorcycle collided with."
Insp Biggin said it was a tragic situation for such a young man.
"We certainly feel for his family and friends at this time," he said.
The tragic event was a timely reminder of the dangers of the road, Insp Biggin said.
"Motorcyclists are a lot more vulnerable than other road users and they need to take that into account when they are riding," he said.
"Roads can be dangerous and the rules need to be taken seriously."
The death comes after a holiday period in the city with no fatalities.
Insp Biggin said this was "definitely" a set back to the relatively quiet Christmas season.
