WHILE roads in and out of Mount Isa still remained officially closed yesterday, some were briefly opened to allow trucks through carrying much needed supplies.
Aussie Bake was among those lucky enough to get their supplies.
Without the truck the business would have run out of flour today, but instead they were able to bake nearly double their normal order to supply supermarkets, corner stores and other businesses with bread.
Owner Peter Schiavo said he was relieved the flour made it to Mount Isa.
“It was touch and go for a while there, but we’re very happy we have more flour so now people won’t have to go without bread.”
The NQX transport truck arrived in Mount Isa at around midday yesterday.
It came from Townsville and managed to get through Julia Creek when the floodwaters receded.
Not long after the truck got through, the road was again declared officially closed.
Supplies bound from Brisbane also made it to Mount Isa and Cloncurry late Monday night after they managed to get through floodwater in McKinlay.
The truck was carrying frozen food, groceries and perishables for Woolworths.
Cloncurry store manager Mark Hampton said they had been working around the clock to get supplies to the region.
“We’ve had a plan in place for many days and have been working with the logistics manager in Brisbane,” he said.
“This is not the first time we’ve been flooded in, so we’ve done this before.
“Our local contacts like police are invaluable to helping us make the decisions of when it’s safe to cross the waters.”
Coles also got a delivery around the same time as Woolworths with some dairy and groceries from Brisbane; and again yesterday morning with fresh fruit and vegetables from Townsville.
So did Super IGA, which received stocks of perishables and some groceries from Townsville late Monday afternoon.
While these trucks managed to get through the river crossings on both the Flinders and Landsborough highways, RACQ still advised motorists to stay where they were and not attempt to cross floodwaters.
