SPINIFEX State College will walk down their own yellow brick road when they present The Wiz school musical in July.
The Wiz is a hip, upbeat, motown version of the perennial Wizard of Oz, and Spinifex's take on the wickedly amusing 1975 Broadway musical will feature a student cast of 32 actors, 16 core dancers and 40 in the chorus alongside the help of eight staff members from both campuses.
Spinifex State College principal Denise Kostowski said the talent this year is expected to be brilliant.
"We have a few callbacks for students to re-audition for particular parts," Mrs Kostowski said.
"The talent for the musical is so great in all areas of music, dance, and acting so it was really tough for the staff involved to choose who was suited to what part."
Dorothy's ventures in the Land of Oz have been set to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul music.
Producer and teacher at Spinifex State College Clara Hogarth said it's a story everybody knows.
"The Wiz is a mysterious, opulent and fanciful take on the fantasy The Wizard of Oz," Ms Hogarth said.
"We have a wonderful cast of actors, singers and dancers who have amazing talent to showcase.
"We're all so excited to have now announced the cast list for the musical and couldn't wait to read through the script on Friday afternoon."
Mrs Kostowski said those planning to attend can expect plenty of rhythm and blues throughout the musical, much like The Wiz, the super soul musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" film adaptation released in 1978 which starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Mabel King and Richard Pryor.
The 1975 broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and has since had revivals in New York, London, San Diego, the Netherlands and an Off Broadway Encore concert version which was staged in June 2009.
The Wiz will be staged on July 27-28.
