MOUNT Isa was well represented at the Athletics North Queensland Oz Squad camp held at Townsville at weekend.
Of the 44 attending athletes, seven were from Mount Isa, not including former local, Jacob Cooper who moved to Longreach earlier this year. Overall numbers were down from previous years due to a conflict of dates with athletics carnivals held in Cairns and the Gold Coast during the same period.
Athletes from Emerald in the south to Marlin Coast in the north attended the camp designed to give elite and semi-elite athletes access to four of Queensland's best Level 5 coaches.
The coaching staff consisted of Brett Green, Terry West, Peter Lawler and Max Debnam - all have coached athletes to the top level.
The Mount Isa team of James Sweeney, Nikki Dickson, Brad Watt, Holly Johnstone, Ben Burke, Adam Farlow and Brianna Smith.
All of the athletes agreed the camp was well worth the distance travelled to gain access to different coaches of a higher level than available at home.
Ken Dickson, one of Mount Isa's two Level 2 coaches, was in attendance for a few of the sessions and said it was a real eye-opener.
"It was good to see our athletes picking up on some fresh ideas from other coaches," he said.
"It's always good to have the things we had been telling them reinforced by someone else."
Dickson said one of Mount Isa's most talented all-around athletes, James Sweeney was offered some pertinent advice.
"James was encouraged by the coaches to consider competing in the decathlon event," he said.
"He was excelling in all events, and they said he was showing enough potential to be competitive at the decathlon."
Sweeney said he would look to take the suggestions on board later in the year.
"I think I might give the decathlon a go at the ANQ championships in October and see how it goes," he said.
"I am really glad I went to the camp, I just couldn't get my javelin distance back to where it was last year. But after just one session I'm now throwing both my 700gram and the open 800gram javelins to 46m."
The camp gave athletes a chance to hone their skills in their favoured events as well as gain extra knowledge in other critical areas such as nutrition, massage, gym and physio.
They have all returned with a new found zest for competing, with Nikki Dickson nudging the Club Hammer and Javelin records after a training session on the day she returned to the Isa.
The athletes are now eagerly looking forward to competing at the upcoming Schools Districts, Regionals and hopefully State Championships in the following months.
