Training pays off for athlete

29 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
JAMES Sweeney has stepped up his training for the upcoming schools District and Regional Championships, and it seem to be paying handsome dividends.

The 16-year-old set a new club record in his javelin event with a throw of 44.45m and is hoping for to further improve on his this record by reaching 50m barrier sometime this year.

With his fitness level on the rise he has set his sights on breaking the 800m record, and although it's not one of his favoured events, he was successful with a time of 2:25:5, taking four seconds off the old mark.

Whilst regaining his breath, Sweeney outlined it may take a while to warm to endurance competition.

"You would have to be crazy to want to do distance events all the time," he said.

Week 13 would have to have been the calmest day seen for the whole season.

The usual wind that confronts the athletes down the 100m straight was virtually non-existent, resulting in an extraordinary amount of exceptional personal bests on the track.

Sixty-one personal bests were accomplished from 112 possibilities with most being a half a second or better than the athletes previous personal bests.

As the season presses on, the perfect five from five personal bests becomes increasingly difficult as athletes put in their best efforts each week. Week 13 saw a massive effort from seven-year-old Melanie Butler who accomplished the feat in blistering form.

Butler took 0.7 of a second off her 100m time, 3.3 seconds from her 200m as well as adding 4cm to her long jump, 40cm to her discus and over a metre to her turbo javelin.

Only two other athletes that day came close with four from five, being six-year-old Dillan Frazer and eleven-year-old Sara Grant.

Week 14 saw three more accomplish four from five being Tileah Preece, Corey Pattison and Yasmin Crebbin.

Nine athletes will receive Legend Certificates from the past two week's competition for outstanding performances in a particular event.

They are Sienna Hume, Tileah Preece, Breanna Waerea, Cameron Preece, Phoebe Ryder, Shanara Body, Shackiah Body, Sara Grant and Ben Burke.

The next major event on the athletic club calendar is the Outback Sunset Track & Field Carnival at Longreach which is combined with the North-West Regional Schools Trials on August 21 and 22 hosted by the Longreach Athletics Club.

Nomination forms are now available through the club.
