Andre spreading healthy message

01 Feb, 2012 06:52 AM
ANDRE Moore is back in Mount Isa with his size 17 sneakers and soaring 2.04 metre tall body.

And he's back making a large imprint at Good Shepherd Catholic College this week, spreading positive messages on healthy bodies and healthy minds with his Big Feat Basketball and Mentoring program.

A prominent name with the Brisbane Bullets through the 1990s, Andre, now 47, said "Big Feat" basketball clinics highlight both the positives and the pitfalls involved in life.

"It's my second time in the Isa and although it's pretty hot here in the afternoon, the students seem to be enjoying time out on the courts keeping active, and listening indoors on how to stay healthy," Andre said.

"You only have one body so its important to stretch, exercise and stay really healthy."

Andre said his program is all about spreading good messages.

"I talk a lot about some of the positives and pitfalls in sport and life in general as well," he said.

Andre highlighted the importance of studying and completing high school.

"Even basketballers have to study - it's important in whatever you do," Andre said.

"I'm pleased to be able to return to Mount Isa and continue promoting my Big Feat program to students - it's great to be back."

As Andre passed his oversized Nike sneaker around the classroom of listening Good Shepherd Catholic College students, Kirra Jones, 16, said she was pleased to see another motivational speaker make it to Mount Isa.

"We don't really get many motivational speakers in Mount Isa and I think it's great to see Andre Moore making his way out to a city as remote as Mount Isa," Kirra said.

She said she found it interesting to understand the willing and able personalities involved sport.

"He spoke a lot of the people who are willing and unable, unable and unwilling, unwilling and able, and willing and able," Kirra said.

"It's interesting to hear this and it promotes the fact that we are all capable of doing something without getting pushed to do it."

Andre played in the National Basketball League with the Brisbane Bullets, helping them to the 1990 NBL grand final series against the Perth Wildcats, before being selected for the 1991 NBL All Star Game played in Melbourne.
