PROVING he was the ideal man for the job, Town captain/coach Ben Watt made a clean sweep of his club’s awards at the Town Rugby League Football Club presentation night on Saturday.
The 26-year-old ran out of things to say as he stood up to accept the Players’ Player, Best and Fairest and Player of the Year awards.
Modestly, Watt credited his teammates for his sensational performances this season in the Mount Isa Rugby League A-grade competition.
“I can’t have an impact on games without the support of my teammates, so this award is for all of us, not just me,” he said when accepting the best and fairest.
“We had a great year and it was a shame we couldn’t go one better.
“But if the club will have me I’ll be back next year and I hope everyone else will stay as well so we can have another crack.”
This season was Watt’s first attempt at coaching and away from Town he also had a stellar season.
He captained the Mount Isa/Mid West Foley Shield team in Townsville and then led Mount Isa to its first Outback Carnival win at Barcaldine in May.
Watt, along with seven other Mount Isa players, made the Outback Queensland team and captained the side to a 36-26 victory against Outback New South Wales last month.
On a night where Town also invited back its 1999 premiership team, believed to be the only A-grade side to go through a season undefeated, it was fitting that five-eighth Jim Wreford won two of the other major awards - Most Promising Player and Coaches Award.
A former Town junior, Wreford was coached by 1999 premiership star Peter Brack, who was present in the room at the time.
Having played his first senior season for Town this year, Wreford said it was a dream come true.
“I remember as a kid I always wanted to play for Townies,” he said.
“They were the heroes to us back then, so to play for them this year and to do well is a dream come true.”
Town president Steve Bax awarded lock Andy McGrath the president’s award, acknowledging the Keas Rugby Union captain had made a big impact at Town in his first full season.
Centreman Jamie Williams was named most consistent back, while Jackson Seymour was rewarded for his stellar season with the most consistent forward trophy.
After the 2009 formalities, the awards night shifted to 1999, where the players were introduced and received replica jerseys.
Eleven players were at the reunion, along with two support staff from the glory year which started Town’s run of eight premierships in a row.
