Kids on the ball

14 Dec, 2011 08:22 AM
MORE than 40 young Mount Isa kids have signed on to play ball during a five-day basketball program.

The On The Ball program facilitated by the Stride Foundation is proving to be a hit with the enthusiastic stars of the future.

Stride Foundation program manager Eleanor Sharp said the number of kids who had attended so far had been great and was hoping to see even more young faces in the coming days.

"We started off with about 20 kids on Monday and had doubled that on Tuesday," Ms Sharp said.

The clinic, which will wrap up on Friday, is designed to improve the basketball skills of Mount Isa's junior talent .

However it also emphasises a positive and healthy lifestyle.

Former Cairns Taipans players Dwayne Vale and Timmy Duggan joined Ms Sharp and Victorian based coach Jai Cesari to pass on their knowledge of the game and how to stay active and healthy.

Vale, who was born in Mount Isa and began playing as a junior in the city before moving to the coast, said it was great to see so many young people at the clinic.

"I was really looking forward to coming back and getting to work with the kids and see the stadium that had just been finished when I left."

Vale said the goal of the program was to get as many kids running around and active.

"I remember as a kid I used to love attending clinics, especially if there were former players or coaches from the NBL," he said.

"It was always inspiring and, hopefully, by coming out here we can have the same impact and promote an active lifestyle."

Duggan who has spent several years using basketball to promote health through programs like Hoops4Health said while the kids learnt the fundamentals of the game, the On The Ball program also taught them about a healthy way of life.

"After we've run them through drills, we try and impart some of our knowledge about eating well, setting goals and being positive," he said.

"Things like participation, respect and positivity can be mad more fun with a basketball and kids tend to listen more."

The program is being held at the Mount Isa basketball stadium (Sunset Stadium) on Sports Parade and will run until Friday, December 16.

Coaching times: 8-12 years old at 9.15am-11.30am; 13-16 years old at 12.15pm-2.30pm.

All children looking to register must have a parent or legal guardian present.
