Bulls look to consolidate

03 Feb, 2012 07:00 AM
THE Western Bulls will look to consolidate top spot when the regular season resumes in the Bell and Moir Mount Isa Cricket Association competition tomorrow at Sunset Oval.

After a convincing win against Black Stars in the final of the Twenty20 series, the Bulls face a tough challenge against a Panthers side who will be looking to fire after a poor showing in the short format of the game.

Western Bulls captain Adrian Morrisby said the Twenty20 win had given the side some confidence but going back to the 40-over format could also pose a few problems.

"It was an nice way to finish the Twenty20 series but the side will now have to shift its focus back to the regular season," Morrisby said.

"The batsmen and the bowlers will have to change their mind sets and remember they have to stay out in the middle a little bit longer."

Morrisby said he was pleased with the form shown by his players.

"Jamie Stewart and Marty McGauran batted for an extended period and hopefully they can do the same on the weekend," he said.

"Kyle Anderson was impressive with the ball. His line and length were spot on restricting the runs and taking wickets and against some of Panthers batsmen we will need him to repeat that kind of performance."

Morrisby also hinted some of the younger players who starred in the Twenty20 would also get a look in.

"I think Jye Graham and Frank Long have earned a chance to compete for a spot in the 11 with the way they contributed in our Twenty20 success," he said.

The Bulls will be hoping Mick Hall returns to the line-up but Morrisby is confident the side has the players to win without the talented all-rounder.

"I think we showed last week we can win without Mick, but it will mean taking all our chances and working hard in the field."

Morrisby said Panthers posed a significant threat despite playing below par in the Twenty20 series.

"With guys like Archie Macpherson, Chas Eichmann and a few handy bowlers they can never be underestimated."

After a solid start to the regular season, Panthers will look to put the disappointing Twenty20 behind them and look to qualify for finals action.

Panthers captain Luke Graefe will miss the game with Eichmann taking the reins and the stand-in skipper will need to show the way with the bat.

Steve Andrews and Adnan Wani will be asked to perform with the ball.
