 Bulls to test frontrunners

Bulls to test frontrunners

06 Nov, 2009 08:05 AM
WESTERN Bulls return from a week’s break tomorrow in the Bell and Moir Toyota Mount Isa Cricket A-grade competition, but they’ll have to be at the top of their game if they are to topple the undefeated Cavaliers.

The Bulls have only dropped one game this season, but face Cavs for the first time in what should be an intriguing battle at Captain Cook Oval.

Little separates these two sides on paper, but Cavaliers will fancy their chances to continue their winning ways.

If they can snare opening Bulls batsman Jamie Stewart early and expose last year’s grand finalists’ middle order, Cavs should be able to reduce their rivals to a moderate tally.

However, if Stewart fires, Western Bulls will be hard to stop, especially as their middle order boasts some big hitting batsmen who can capitalise on tired bowling late in the innings.

Alternatively, there are no major scalps in the Cavaliers batting line-up, which means the Bulls’ bowling attack will have to plug away all afternoon and ensure their fielding skills are at their best.

From their openers to their tail end, there are no weaknesses in Cavaliers batting, however no one has yet to make a big tally this season.

In the other game tomorrow, Townview face Blackstars in what should be another highly competitive contest.

The reigning premiers start as favourites, although must not underestimate Townview, who have several match-winners.

Paul Scarsi wasn’t required to bat last week against Panthers and should be hungry for runs, while teammate Cameron Frost is another due for some runs.

The Maroons will have to ensure they start well though, with Blackstars bowlers Jay Morris and Mark Shipley in rare form.

If openers Joe Dempsey and Martin Carland can bat through the first 10 overs, it will provide a catalyst for a score in excess of 240 at Sunset Oval.

Blackstars’ have a variety of batting options and their top order should change slightly this week with Andrew Lawrenson expected to return and captain Nathan Giles to bat higher up the order.

Anthony Kyle is also in hot form and must be respected when at the crease.

Play starts at 12.45pm.
