SPINIFEX Senior Campus had too much toe for Good Shepherd Catholic College in an AFL “friendly” on Tuesday at Mount Isa Rugby Park.
In a highly skilled and entertaining contest, the public school banged on 4.6 to 1.0 in the opening quarter, before going on to win the game by 68 points.
For many of the students, it was their first time playing a game of Australian Rules.
Spinifex had the advantage of boasting several “senior” teenage Buffaloes players from the Mount Isa competition.
It was no surprise the likes of Riaan Oosthuizen and Sarg Batty both dominated, while Oosthuizen’s brother Hanco showed he has a big future, booting four goals.
The final score was Spinifex 11.19 (85) defeated Good Shepherd 2.5 (17).
Mount Isa AFL development officer Kyle Juracic said despite many players being new to the game, he was impressed by the skill level.
“A lot of these youngster have a lot of natural ability,” he said.
“The tackling was very fierce, but the kicking and handballing was also pretty good.
“With a bit of training, some of these teenagers would have very bright futures.”
Another game is to be scheduled next week, with many new players expected to pull the boots on after word got around the schoolyard about the enjoyment factor.
