Wehrman considers A-League option

09 Feb, 2010 09:04 AM
CLONCURRY-born soccer star Kasey Wehrman could well be back playing on Australian turf as soon as next season.

The 32-year-old Indigenous midfielder has been the target of A-league recruiters for several seasons after being based in Norway for the past nine years.

With the possible inception of two additional clubs into the competition next season, Wehrman remains on the radar of scouts of not only new, but existing teams.

Queensland Roar, Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory last year made bids to secure the services of the midfielder, and with the genuine prospect of a return home, is sure to attract the ire of all A-league clubs.

Wehrman was released from his Norwegian club Fredrikstad at the conclusion of 2009.

Before heading to Norway, Wehrman was a key player during a successful period for Perth Glory at the start of the millenium.

And before that spent four years at the Brisbane Strikers, where his talent was outlined by being awarded NSL under-21 player of the year in 1996-1997.

The Mount Isa junior last played for the Socceroos in 2006 against Ghana in a friendly after five years out of the national team, but was one of the first Indigenous players to regularly feature in the Socceroos line-up, playing several games for the national team in the early years of Frank Farina's tenure as coach.

He was also a mainstay of Raul Blanco's Olyroo team for the Sydney Olympics, scoring a memorable goal against Nigeria.

While A-league clubs including the North Queensland Fury, could possibly seek the well-credentialed player's services, Norwegian media have speculated that there is interest in Wehrman from clubs in Denmark.

Wehrman has also plied his trade in a low-profile Norwegian career with Moss FK and Lillestrom, and last year the North Queenslander had a short loan spell with Norway's Lyn, but a move home to finally play A-League football might not be too far off.

Former Queensland Roar striker Michael Baird was also one of three Australians released by Romanian club Universitatea Craiova, and like Wehrman, A-League fans have not seen the pair in action before.

Wehrman was capped 11 times for the Australian under-20 team and made his debut for the full Australian national team in 1998 against Fiji in Brisbane.
