CLONCURRY racehorse owners Lyn and Peter Lawlor are counting down the days to December 31.
That's when their cracking two-year-old, Noogoora Burr, gets to start again in his final lead-up race to the rich Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.
"He's the best we've had," said a proud Peter from his mining and crushing contracting business in Cloncurry. The son of Royal Academy won easily on debut in the first 2YO event of the season at Eagle Farm and that was a sign of things to come.
He then did it easily in a barrier trial to keep his fitness up. "We knew he had a pretty good chance at winning (on Saturday). He's got good gate speed and the jockey (Rick Malyon) rode him a treat."
Win, he did, knocking over the hot-pot Sizzling and clocking a scintillating 57.71 seconds for the 1000m - just 0.7 seconds outside the race record.
The win was a family affair with Noogoora Burr trained by Peter's brother David at Doomben.
However, the celebrations for the Lawlor family were two-fold on Saturday when their solid stayer Maling scored a thrilling win in the opening event over 2100m.
The Class 4 galloper, by Redoutes Choice, was taking on Open class for the first time and led them into the straight.
He was headed by runner up Kar Ma Te but fought back to win by a half-head over the 2100m.
The prizemoney was nice, but of equal interest to the Lawlors was that 40-1 had been bet on the Friday before the event, but the weight of smart money saw those odds tumble into 20-1 and less.
"He doesn't like wet tracks but he's beaten Open horses here. He finished fourth in the Queensland cup and we knew he'd be hard to beat on Saturday."
Peter said the immediate racing future of Maling was uncertain as there were limited races for him over 2000m or more. The unbeaten Noogoora Burr and Maling are easily the best horses the family has owned, he said.
Among their other acquisitions were Handbag and Huff 'n' Puff. It's certain there'll be plenty of huff and puff on Magic Millions day.
Peter said trainer David reckoned Noogoora Burr is better suited over 1200m to 1400m.
The $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) is set to be run on the Gold Coast on January 14, 2012.
