Even mudlarkers took a rain check

19 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM

THE final race meeting for the North West in 2011 was abandoned when Mount Isa received nearly 100 millimetres of heavy rain on Saturday morning.

A violent thunderstorm hit the city around 5am and forced the Mount Isa Race Club to cancel it's five card meeting.

Mount Isa Race Club president Peter Inwood in conjunction with race stewards made the call after an inspection concluded the downpour had made the track unsuitable for racing.

"We were all ready to go, but after four inches of rain on Saturday and further rain on Sunday it was not possible," Inwood said.

The Mount Isa Race Club looked to reschedule the meeting for Sunday but further rain in the region scuttled the proposed plan.

Inwood said the Mount Isa Race Club would now look to hold it's final race meeting of the year next Saturday if racing Queensland agreed to the proposal.
