PROMISING two-year-old Noogoora Burr's Magic Millions run may have been over before it started after connections discovered the gelding had jumped with a sore shin.
After a slow start, Noogoora Burr battled bravely to haul in several runners after being last at the final turn but finished eleven lengths behind eventual winner Driefontein in the $2 Million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the weekend.
Cloncurry owner Peter Lawlor said a sore shin discovered after the race may have handicapped Noogoora Burr's run.
"He definitely wasn't the same horse as in his previous runs and Ric (jockey Ric McMahon) said soon after he jumped that he felt something was not right," he said.
Lawlor said the injury was a common occurrence among young horses and the talented two-year-old would now be spelled for a period of 6-8 weeks.
"I think he has done enough to earn a rest and we will look at bringing him back for the Brisbane Carnival," Lawlor said.
While Noogoora Burr did not make it a million dollar pay day for his owners the grey gelding still provided them with their biggest thrill in racing at the weekend.
"It was definitely a special race to be a part of and I couldn't be more proud of the horse and my brother David who has trained him," Lawlor said.
"I think there were something like eight horses who were undefeated and it was a very strong field.
"It's been a wonderful few months and we are all looking forward to bringing the horse back later in the year."
