THE North West District lawn bowls prepared to roll into action for the 2012 season when the Island Bowls Club held its first event for the season.
While competition was more intense at the bar for the opening event, Mount Isa's bowlers are looking forward to a big year ahead.
Leichardt Services Bowls Club president and North West District selector Graham Vonhoff said the three clubs that make up the North West District were looking forward to stepping back on the mats.
"The Island Bowls Club, Leichardt Services Bowls Club and the Cloncurry Bowls Club will start club and Blue Pennant competition next month and all clubs look to have some talented players," Mr Vonhoff said.
"There will be some exciting games and especially when the each club sends out its 12 best players for the Blue Pennant events."
Also on the radar for the North West District bowlers will be the Tennant Creek Easter tournament and the state titles on the Gold Coast in May.
"The tournament in Tennant Creek draws a lot of competitors because of the big prize money on offer and this year we will send away one of the strongest district teams in a long time," Mr Vonhoff said.
"In previous seasons work commitments have robbed the North West District of some of our best players but this year most of the top players have put their hand up for selection."
Mr Vonhoff said it was also pleasing to see a few young guns coming through the ranks.
"The likes of Dave Cahill jnr and Dean Wildermuth jnr are a couple of rising stars in the district who have plenty of potential to shine this season," he said.
Both players have won selection in the North West District representative team.
