UP-AND-COMING Mixed Martial Arts star Cobba Mooney has vowed to come back bigger and better after being defeated at Brace For War 3 at Townsville's Jupiter's Casino on January 16.
The 18-year-old was invited to fight on the card by promoter Kya Pate, and came up against Brisbane fighter Jacob Mahony.
But despite a strong showing early in the fight, he was unable to maintain the constant pressure, and was defeated by choke-out in round one.
"I really wanted to come out positively and aggressively," he said.
"I started off really well, with a few big kicks, a couple of hands and blocked a few knees."
The Mount Isa lad pushed the the pace from the outset, and tried to get the fight on his terms, but eventually succumbed to his opponents stamina.
"A left jab just missed and a big right hook missed," he said.
"I got him in the clinch and threw a few knees, but couldn't keep the pressure on."
Mooney was choked-out, a technique by which the fighter cuts off the carotid artery, blocking blood and oxygen to the brain causing the victim to become unconscious.
He was determined not be forced into submission by tapping out, but was out cold for 25 seconds, before being released and regaining consciousness.
The focus for Mooney now turns to the Warriors Realm Fight Championship (WRFC) in Mount Isa on May 7.
Trainers will heading up to Mount Isa to conduct trials in the lead-up to the event, looking to identify the local talent to take part in the night.
However, he admits he has some work to do in the build-up to the event to ensure his place on the card.
"I'll be working down with Chris Barkley at the Mount Isa Boxing Club, working on my technique, and also at the judo club to improve my throws and submission work" he said.
"I need to be in peak fitness for the fight, so I'll be working on some conditioning aswell.
"They want aggressive fighters, toe-to-toe fighters who stand up.
"That's what the promoters and the crowd want to see."
Rumours of Australian fighter, Elvis (the king of rock 'n' rumble)' hitting Mount Isa for WRFC have Mooney excited.
"He's my favourite fighter in Australia, it would be awesome if he came to Mount Isa," he said.
