DESPITE boasting the best and most consistent player on the Mount Isa squash circuit, John Barturen’s team is the underdog in tonight’s A-grade men’s Buffs Club spring season grand final.
Barturen, the skipper, will most likely win his tie against opposition captain Dave Robinson, but whether his three teammates can follow suit remains to be seen.
Robinson’s side proved too good in the major semi-final last week to advance, while Barturen’s mob had to work hard for victory in Wednesday night’s preliminary final for a second crack at a grand final berth.
However, the extra game and the added confidence could work in their favour.
Jason Dwyer, who will play Greg Targett in the fourth line, almost single-handedly put his team into the final.
On Wednesday he had to play two ties in the absence of teammate Jason Norrie and took his step-up match into five sets, allowing Barturen to cruise to victory.
Still, the second and third lines could prove the clincher tonight.
Adam Lovett and Jason Ranie are expected to topple Manu Ruri and Norrie respectively.
The only sure thing of the night though is this final will go down to the wire.
In the A-grade women’s final, Edna Russell has the near impossible task when she has to take on the unbeaten Aleesha Chapman at the top level.
Chapman is a former representative squash player and is one of the finest women players to have graced the courts in Mount Isa.
The odds say Russell will go down in three sets, but if the skipper can fight out a four-setter, it may prove to be a winning game.
Down the order, the match-ups are very even, with Jo Den Hertog, Sam Keller and Debbie John very even compared to Ronnie Murphy, Sarah Lyons and Tracey Robinson.
While Chapman’s side has an obvious advantage through its skipper, it must not take tonight’s final for granted.
In B-grade, Will Beven’s team takes on Simon Jackson’s outfit in what should be a close men’s final, while Gemma Henderson’s and Megan Carpenter’s respective teams will fight out the women’s final.
In the C-grade men’s final, Hugo Valencio takes back on Tom Hutton, which have been marathon matches in the past and could go either way.
TONIGHT’S draw is:
6.30pm: Court 1, C-grade men, Tom Hutton v Hugo Valencia; Phil Kuzmanovic v Josh Tenza; Nathan Mellor v Aaron Wright.
