THE newly-formed Western Extended Rugby League (WEL) competition has received a shot in the arm with 10 teams now ready to do battle.
Originally Black Stars was the only Mount Isa side to sign on for the initial eight-team competition.
But now the addition of Town and Wanderers has added to the region's rugby league menu.
The option for Town and Wanderers to join the WEL arose after Ilfracombe was forced to withdraw its side.
Organisers of the WEL then sent the invitation back out to the Mount Isa teams and both took up the offer.
New Town president Paul Harkin said after initially declining an invitation due to uncertainty with player availability and travel costs, the club was now in a position to commit.
"Once we saw the draw and the format we were very happy to be able to join the new competition," Harkin said.
"I think organisers have done a good job of giving the competition a real chance to succeed."
Harkin said Town's commitment to the WEL was welcomed by players.
"I think the boys will be looking forward to playing fresh faces and if a side won the Mount Isa competition and wasn't involved in the WEL it would be a bit of a hollow victory," he said.
With both Town and Wanderers putting their hand up, WEL organisers needed another side to even the number.
The Hughenden Bulls were approached and the only Mid West side not to have signed on initially put its hand up.
Queensland Rugby League (QRL) development officer for the North West Scott Kyle said after registering 29 players on their books the Bulls agreed to make the WEL a 10 team competition.
"It's great news for rugby league in the region and hopefully we can have a successful WEL competition in 2012 and try to make it bigger and better in the future," Kyle said.
In further good news, both the Mount Isa and Mid West clubs have been supported with the (QRL) Northern Division manager Scott Nosworthy pledging $20,000 towards the travel costs of the Mount Isa and Mid West clubs.
The new 10 team competition will culminate with the top two teams playing off in the grand final in late July at the home ground of the side with the best record.
