League season starts to hot up

03 Jul, 2009 10:45 AM
TOWN and Wanderers will enjoy one final hitout this Sunday before they meet in the Mount Isa Rugby League A-grade competition’s major semi-final in 10 days time.

Both sides should be too good for their respective rivals at Alec Inch Oval this weekend, with Wanderers playing the Isa Bulls and Town facing Black Stars.

Coaches and players will no doubt be desperate to walk away unscathed, with bigger fish to fry a week later.

However, Town coach Ben Watt said last week he will ask his side to play the same as they have done all season.

“I don’t think you can ask a team to go out there and just try and get away with playing,” he said.

“Black Stars will come hard at us because they have to. They know they need to find their form heading into the finals.

“If we just sit back, we’ll probably come off even worse than if we go in hard, because they’ll have the momentum up.”

Watt said keeping his side’s confidence sky-high was the key to success.

“We can’t start thinking about finals. Our main aim is to focus on playing smart football and concentrate on the things we work on at training,” he said.

Wanderers coach Daryl Duncan agreed with his Town counterpart.

“The Bulls copped a flogging last week so we expect them to come out firing,” he said.

“We know we’ve still got improvement to do before we can beat Town in a final so the aim is to come out and play well for 80 minutes.”

Although they walked away with a 62-40 win last week against Black Stars, Duncan was not satisfied with the result.

“Hopefully we’ve learned some lessons from that game and we come out switched on this week,” he said.

“Against the good sides, if you’re off your game for five minutes, you can blow your chances.”

The key players for Wanderers this season have been Davin Turner, Brendan Baillie, Anton Saltmere and Quentin Marshall.

Duncan said he was hoping for a 17-man effort this Sunday and for the remainder of the season.

“If you start relying on individual efforts you won’t get too far in the finals,” he said.

“If everyone plays at 100 per cent we know we are good enough to beat Town and every other side.”
