Tight battle for title

31 Jul, 2009 09:11 AM
IT’S the game we’ve all been waiting for.

After a hectic season, Town and Wanderers will finally meet in the Mount Isa Rugby League A-grade grand final on Sunday.

Town, the reigning premiers and this year’s ladder leaders, were hot favourites to win their 10th grand final in 11 seasons.

But Wanderers, which was the only side to beat Town in 2009, must not be discounted.

More than 1000 people were expected to pack Alec Inch Oval on Sunday for the big game.

If Town was to win, it’ll need to make sure it gets off to a good start.

In the past four encounters against Wanderers, the side has started poorly and let the Devils score the first three tries.

If Town is sluggish off the mark on Sunday, the Devils will be a lot harder to run down.

Town captain/coach Ben Watt will be desperate to make sure his team was focussed from the opening minute.

“It’s something we have addressed and I’m confident we’ll be right on the weekend,” he said.

“In those past games, its not like we have been bad early, we just had trouble gaining possession.

“When we actually got the ball, we were just as damaging as Wanderers.”

The second-rower said he is expecting big games from his senior players - Zeb Kyle, John Venz, Jamie Williams and Brent Clark.

“These guys have been with the team for a while now and they’ll need to be providing leadership on the day,” Watt said.

“But I’m expecting all the boys to play well. We have prepared well for this.”

Wanderers’ coach Daryl Duncan said his team was also raring to go.

“We’ll take our strongest team of the year into the grand final so that is a big upside,” he said.

“The players know we can beat Town - we’ve beaten them before this year - it’s just a matter of performing on the day.”

There is no shortage of talent in the Wanderers line-up.

From fullback Pat Carney to centres Trevor Chong and Dan Goddard, you could make a case the Devils had a stronger side on paper.

Last season’s Mount Isa player of the year Brendan Baillie will play at halfback, while Anton Saltmere will join him in the halves at five-eighth.

The likes of Quentin Marshall and Davin Turner will add some spice to the side, while Carl Bambrick, Evan Ah Wing and Jerry Esrom will provide the grunt up forward.

For Town, the likes of five-eighth Jim Wreford and lock Andy McGrath will need to play big games, while star player Aaron Kuskey should be able to provide some flair.

But most importantly, the key for both sides is the ability to hold their nerve under the pressure of a big game.

Discipline has to be a priority and the players’ determination to dig deep could prove the difference between either side winning and losing.

Whatever the outcome, it should be a terrific contest.

Play starts at Alec Inch Oval at 3pm.
