Wanderers beat Town in a boilover

25 May, 2009 07:58 AM
WANDERERS caused a sensational boilover when they defeated Mount Isa Rugby League reigning premiers Town 40-18 yesterday.

In picture perfect conditions at Alec Inch Oval, Wanderers led from start to finish in a match which was described as the “perfect team effort”.

Unfortunately the game was marred just before half time when Town winger Dave Bartolo was on the receiving end of a fierce tackle.

Town trainer Jim Newport was quickly on the scene and upon hearing Bartolo had pins and needles, called for an ambulance.

The game was delayed for more than 20 minutes.

Bartolo was said to be in a stable condition last night.

Because of the delay, officals decided to end the first half at the injury and kick off the second half when play resumed.

Town, who trailed 16-6 at the break, were desperate to keep their unbeaten winning streak in tact early in the second half, but were brilliantly flawed by five-eight Trevor Chong, who found plenty of space to score his side’s fourth try.

The result was put beyond doubt several minutes later when fleet footed winger Daniel Simmons made an interecpt from a stray Town pass and ran the best part of 80 metres to score a try under the posts.

Halfback Anton Saltmere’s fourth conversion had the score at 28-6 and the silence from the Town sideline was deafening.

But Town coach Ben Watt wasn’t prepared to give up.

Knowing his side still had 30 minutes to make an impression, he took it upon himself to lead from the front.

He scored a try to get the score back to 28-12 and was instrumental in setting up Aaron Kuskey for another to get back within 10 points.

But Wanderers had the answers.

Chong got on the end of another Town mistake to score his second try and several minutes later Quentin Marshall did likewise to seal the deal.

Wanderers coach Daryl Duncan had nothing but praise for his players after the match.

“We came here with a plan and we executed it brilliantly,” he said.

“It was a real 17-man effort.

“ Town are the benchmark team and to beat them with just about a full side in was a real credit to our boys.”

Still missing several players, Wanderers will no doubt take great confidence from the result and use it to build towards a more successful 2009 campaign.

Duncan said many of his players were still hurting from last year, when they lost against Black Stars to cost them a chance of playing in the grand final.

“We’ve got a point to prove so we need to make sure we keep up these sort of efforts right through to the end of the season,” he said.

“One win doesn’t make a season.”

Meanwhile, Black Stars continued their improvement with a 38-22 win over the Isa Bulls.

It was tit for tat throughout most of the match, before the more experienced Black Stars broke away.

This game was also marred with injury, when Starries’ Kyle Woolfe had to be taken to hospital via ambulance with a seemingly serious ankle injury.

Best players for Black Stars were Scott Kyle, Clinton Fenton, Timmy Daniels and Clint Callope.

Cody Saltmere, Patrick Dargan, Arnold Anderson and Trent Stark were the Bulls’ best performers.

All four Isa Bulls tries were shared, while James Maher, John Tamati and Daniels each had two in Black Stars’ tally of eight.
