AFTER claiming their only win for the season before the Christmas break, Cloncurry will look to upset competition leaders Euros when they meet in the Mount Isa Rugby Union premiership tomorrow night.
Euros will be hot favourites to continue their unbeaten run, and it will take a committed and brave effort for Cloncurry to emerge victorious after a disappointing start to the 2011/12 campaign.
Experienced forward Dan Leydon said before the break a lack of experience in the pack had meant the Cloncurry side was not able to put together consistent phases of play.
"Unfortunately, we seem to take the ball into contact but are not able to recycle possession and set up good ball for our backs," he said.
Cloncurry finally showed glimpses of what they are capable of, albeit against an understrength Warrigals team, in the final game before the break.
Captain Cameron Moore, Leydon and flanker Hamish Chrisp who will look to return from injury give Cloncurry a strong loose forward combination while the experienced Jeremy Grimm and young Sam Brisbane provide height in the lineouts.
If the Cloncurry forwards can get across the advantage line and recycle quick and clean ball, the likes of Angus Chrisp, Alex Ambia, Will Allen and former Euros centre Jacob Takurit have the ability to cause some damage out wide.
Euros, last year's premiers, have set the benchmark for the dropping just one point in a dour 5-all draw with Warrigals back in Round 2.
In the side's final game before the break Euros coach Mick O'Connor said the team had played some of its best rugby.
Captain Simon Ishmael, new recruits Chuan Lee, Wayne Pepe and the improving Mick Hobbs have been strong performers in a pack that has set the platform for the skilful Euros backs.
Halves Maren Huntley and Zemic Patawai will look to unleash their outside men on the back of the strong work of the forwards.
Given space Kaine Manihera, John Viiga and Matt Parata have the pedigree to cut defences apart.
n Kick-off 7.30pm at Rugby Park.
