CLONCURRY may have arrived to the ground on empty but finished its match against Keas with a full tank of fuel to record just the side's second win in the Mount Isa Irish Club Rugby Union Premiership at the weekend.
The Mount Isa based Curry boys found themselves stranded on the side of the road when their bus ran out of fuel 10 kilometres from their home ground.
However, a late kick-off ensured any blushes were spared and behind a strong second half performance Cloncurry stormed home to down Keas 15-5.
Centre and new season signing Jacod Takurit was the hero for the home side, the big centre running in for two classy tries.
Trailing 5-nil at half-time after Keas fullback Eli Sweeney showed speed and strength to cross for the only try of the first 40-minutes, Cloncurry survived an early Keas bombardment after the break before unleashing their backline.
Resolute and stoic defence repelled several Keas raids close to the line to deny the vistors a chance to extend their advantage.
Lifted after holding firm, the Cloncurry forwards battered their way downfield working as unit before five-eight Tim O'Sullivan sparked the backline to life.
The experienced pivot, held the ball up and Takurit ran the perfect line bursting through the gap and showing plenty of pace to outrun the cover defence.
With the scores locked at 5-all, it was more blistering pace in the space of five-minutes that swung the match in Cloncurry's favour.
Cloncurry fullback Mick Philips fielded the ball inside his own half and kicked ahead as he came to the defensive line.
Winger George Toby put on the afterburners and burnt several Keas defenders to reach the ball first and launch himself over the line for a 10-5 scoreline.
The Cloncurry backline was beginning to impose itself on the game, with Angus Chrisp and Jeffery Wilson asking questions of their opposite numbers.
It was Chrisp who orchestrated his side's next try when he found space out wide and put speed machine Tom Banu into a hole.
Banu set-off downfield and held his composure to draw the Keas fullback and gifted Takurit a clear run to the line for his second try of the night.
Cloncurry could have gone further ahead when Banu once more used his pace to beat the defence before kicking inside.
Wilson was first to the bouncing ball but desperate cover from Keas kept them in the match.
Cloncurry's defence held firm and the Cloncurry side could sing its victory song on home soil for the first time this season.
After the match Chrisp said there was a noticeable change in the spirit and attitude at the club.
"It's been a long time regrouping, the numbers are now good, boys are turning up to training so it's typical Cloncurry coming back strong after the Christmas break," he said.
"We are getting to build on some good combinations with the same players consistantly turning up.
"There are some good outside backs with plenty of pace which we saw tonight who are able to take advantage of the forwards' good work."
