RISING Mount Isa junior tennis ace Thomas Braithwaite is looking to his next challenge after helping Queensland to the finals of the 2012 Foundation Cup in Sydney.
The Foundation Cup was a team event designed specifically for regionally-based athletes and was held in conjunction with the Apia International Sydney event.
This was the first year Queensland entered a side in the U13 state-based competition and the side made its mark by topping the round robin competition.
Unfortunatel y, after defeating NSW four rubbers to two in the round robin matches, Braithwaite, 11, and his Queensland teammates fell to the Blues in a reversal of their earlier win.
The Queensland side proved too strong for NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania in the round robin, turning heads with their debut performance.
Mount Isa Copper City Tennis Club treasurer Theresa Braithwaite travelled to the tournament and said the team benefited from the competition.
"It was such a great achievement from the squad considering it was the first time a Queensland side had competed in the tournament," she said.
"I am sure it is something the boys will remember for a long time."
Thomas Braithwaite said the tournament had provided him with invaluable experience and gave him the chance to test himself against some tough opponents.
The talented Mount Isa star added the event increased his desire to keep improving and he is targeting several more tournaments in what shapes to be a busy year.
