A POWERFUL finishing sprint by top athlete Mars Larsen claimed victory for his team in the Isa RATS corporate challenge triathlon on Sunday morning.
Shockwave Head Splitters, represented by Peter Cross, Neil Goodwin and Larsen, enjoyed a keen battle with the Rebuild Racers throughout the three legs, with the lead changing on three occasions.
Shockwave were ahead by more than a minute after Cross produced a more powerful 600 metre swim than Tim Witten, but an excellent ride from Tony Boyle had Rebuild Racers back in the lead when he outrode Goodwin in the 15km cycle leg.
Little separated the two sides heading into the final leg, but Larsen had the stamina to pull away from Ronnie Francis late in the 4.5km run to bring his team home by a nail biting four seconds.
Shockwave’s final time was 57 minutes and five seconds.
Strong runner Simon Pope produced the goods for his team in the final leg, taking Dog Tired from seventh to third with the second fastest run of the morning.
Teammates Michael Holmes and Anthony Kyle, who completed the swimming and cycling legs respectively, were thrilled with Pope’s performance, bringing their race time to 57:42.
The combination of Cameron Hann, Kyle Mawn and Luke Manhine made up Club Zinc and were not far away in a time of 57:52.
Team PGR rounded out the top five in a time of 58:01.
Good Shepherd Parish were the main winners on the day, though, with $500 going to the church after Shockwave named them as their charity of choice.
Hastings Deerings were the major sponsors of the event and made the donation yesterday.
The NQ Rescue Community Helicopter and Garry Nixon Foundation also benefited with $200 and $100 respectively going to the organisations thanks to the performances of Rebuild Racers and Dog Tired.
