Matt the Rat to test pack

10 Feb, 2012 06:54 AM
THE gauntlet was laid down by new Isa Rat (Mount Isa Running and Triathlon Club) Matthew Grayland at the club's first event of the season.

The 25-year-old blitzed the field over the course of the sprint triathlon and set the benchmark for the rest of the chasing rat pack.

Bringing his experience from Victoria, Grayland's consistent form in the water, on the bike and during the run has ensured regular front runners Geoff Baker, Aidan Hobbs and Paolo La Penna will be working overtime to strengthen their weaker disciplines.

The other big improver over the season should be Clinton Elliot who has vowed to grow gills and turn a weak swimming leg into part of his arsenal to give the top triathletes a swim, ride and run for their money.

"At the moment the swim is the leg letting me down," Elliot said after the previous race.

However the Mine2Mine winner said he would be in the water working hard as he aims to give the Dirt n Dust Triathlon a shake in April.

Kylie Baker led the way in the women's first event but will face stiff competition from Michelle Rowlingson and the fast improving Amanda Gowing.

Veteran competitors Rosina Oliver and Dale Rackham continue to be inspirations for the younger generations including a rising crop of junior triathletes.

The club has several new faces who are giving the sport a try and are happy to welcome any athletes still looking to sign on.

The Bax Plumbing Sprint and Enticer and the Start Construction Junior triathlon events will be held on Saturday from 4.15pm at Lake Moondarra.
