HUNDREDS gathered in the Cloncurry Shire Hall to celebrate Australia Day and attend the Citizenship and Awards Ceremony on Saturday. Mayor Andrew Daniels welcomed special guests three-time Olympian athlete Lisa Curry, Cloncurry's Australia Day Woolworths Ambassador, and State Member for Mount Isa Rob Katter. Cr Daniels presented the Australia Day awards to the worthy recipients who nominated by fellow community members. "These recipients represent only a small portion of the dedicated residents who give without seeking recognition," Cr Daniels said. "To those who go above and beyond and inspire us, we thank you. "Each year I am amazed at the great and terrific volunteer work that our community volunteers do, and all share a common theme - they do what they do not for praise or accolade but for the benefit of the whole community." Cr Daniels thanked Ms Curry for being an inspiartional ambassador and sharing the day with the people of Cloncurry. "Lisa started Australia Day by doing a workout with some residents, then attending our Citizenship and Award ceremony," he said. "After that we had our community breakfast and then we went for a walking tour starting at the Cloncurry Pool where Lisa spent time coaching and inspiring our local swimmers and members of the Cloncurry Crocs Club." The celebrations concluded with games of Rugby Union, Rugby League and a woman's touch football game which featured Ms Curry. "I have had the best Australia Day," Ms Curry said.
