After the program scheduled for Saturday and Sunday was abandoned due to heavy rain in the small town at the weekend, strong winds and sunny blue skies dried the surface at Boulia Turf Club enough for racing to take place.
Always the showcase event of the races, the 1500-metre Australian Hotel Boulia Cup was run over 400m in 2012 but still strongly supported by the vocal and passionate crowd in attendance.
Top honours went to the Don Ainsbury-trained Carbine in the big race, with Chief, trained by Glenda Sutton, taking second place.
Ainsbury took third spot with Decider, while Boulia local Gary Woodhouse trained the fourth-placed Jackie.
A spokesman for the event said it was a good end to the 15th annual running of the camel races.
"There was a really great mood at the track today," he said. "Everyone had a good time and it worked out well in the end."
Victorian resident Angus Thompson, who remained in Boulia in the hope that he would get to see the ships of the desert run at some stage, said he was glad organisers had made the decision to run several, albeit shorter, races.
"The races are what I came to see and I'm really pleased the sun has come out enough for that to happen," he said.
"The organisers should be praised; I can now say I've witnessed a camel race."
